What it is

Adaclav is a brand name for a combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin (a penicillin-type antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps overcome bacterial resistance). It is available as tablets with 875 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid.

What it's used for

Adaclav is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These include lower respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections.

How it's taken

Adaclav tablets are taken by mouth, typically every 12 hours or as directed by a healthcare professional. The exact dose depends on the patient's age, weight, kidney function, and the type of infection. Always follow your doctor's prescription and do not adjust the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include diarrhoea (occurring in about 9% of patients), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginitis (1%). Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, liver problems, and severe diarrhoea due to Clostridioides difficile infection are possible but rare. Seek medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, jaundice, or persistent diarrhoea.

Important cautions

Do not take Adaclav if you have had a serious allergic reaction to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, or if you have ever developed jaundice or liver problems while taking amoxicillin/clavulanate.
