Cikaclav: Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid Tablet

What it is

Cikaclav is a brand of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic, and clavulanic acid helps prevent bacteria from destroying amoxicillin. Together, they are effective against certain bacteria that produce beta-lactamase. It is available as tablets in a strength of 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid. It is registered with NAFDAC under number A11-100090.

What it's used for

Cikaclav is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in adults and children. These include lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia), acute bacterial otitis media (ear infections), sinusitis, and skin and skin structure infections. It is effective against certain bacteria that produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase, which can make some antibiotics ineffective.

How it's taken

Cikaclav tablets are taken by mouth. The dosage depends on the patient's weight, age, and the severity of the infection. Adults and children weighing more than 40 kg typically take one tablet every 12 hours or every 8 hours. For children, the dose is calculated based on body weight. Always follow your doctor's prescription exactly. Do not take more or less than prescribed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it is almost time for the next dose.

Common side effects

The most common side effects include diarrhea or loose stools (reported in about 9% of patients), nausea (3%), skin rashes and hives (3%), vomiting (1%), and vaginal yeast infection (1%). If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor.

Important cautions

Do not take Cikaclav if you have had a serious allergic reaction to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, or if you have ever developed jaundice or liver problems while taking amoxicillin/clavulanate. Serious allergic reactions can occur, including anaphylaxis. Stop the medicine and seek emergency help if you have trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe skin rash. Other serious reactions include severe skin reactions, liver problems, and diarrhea caused by C. difficile. Tell your doctor all your medical conditions, especially if you have kidney or liver disease, or if you are taking any other medicines.
