Pectovasc: Uses, Side Effects, and Availability in Nigeria

What it is

Pectovasc is a brand of amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker that helps lower blood pressure and manage certain types of chest pain (angina). It is available as a 10 mg tablet and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-9563.

What it's used for

Pectovasc is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal heart attacks and strokes. It is also used for coronary artery disease, including chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and angiographically documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or a low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

This medicine is taken by mouth, typically once daily. The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 10 mg once daily. Small, fragile, or elderly patients, as well as those with liver problems, may be started on a lower dose of 2.5 mg once daily. For children, the starting dose is usually 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. Always follow the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of amlodipine are swelling of the legs or ankles (edema), dizziness, flushing, and palpitations. These effects are dose-related. Other side effects reported in more than 1% of patients include fatigue and nausea.

Important cautions

Do not take Pectovasc if you are allergic to amlodipine. Symptomatic low blood pressure (hypotension) is possible, especially in patients with severe aortic stenosis. Worsening of chest pain or even a heart attack can occur after starting or increasing the dose, particularly in those with severe coronary artery disease.
