Norvatab 10mg Tablet - A Brand of Amlodipine

What it is

Norvatab is a brand of amlodipine. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker – a type of medicine that relaxes blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. It helps lower blood pressure and improves blood flow to the heart.

What it's used for

Norvatab is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It is also used for coronary artery disease, including chronic stable angina (chest pain on exertion), vasospastic (Prinzmetal's or variant) angina, and in patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease who do not have heart failure or a low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

Norvatab is taken by mouth, typically once daily. The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 10 mg once daily. Some patients, such as those who are small, fragile, elderly, or have liver problems, may start with a lower dose. For children, the starting dose is generally between 2.5 mg and 5 mg once daily. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions on how to take this medicine.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of amlodipine (the active ingredient in Norvatab) include swelling of the ankles or feet (oedema), dizziness, flushing, and palpitations (awareness of heartbeat). These occur more often at higher doses. Other side effects reported by more than 1% of patients include tiredness (fatigue) and nausea. If any side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your healthcare provider.

Important cautions

Do not take Norvatab if you are allergic to amlodipine. Use with caution in patients with severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the heart valve), as it may cause symptomatic low blood pressure. In patients with severe coronary artery disease, starting or increasing the dose rarely may worsen angina or cause a heart attack. In patients with severe liver disease, the dose should be increased slowly. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and any other medicines you are taking.
