Norvapref: A Brand of Amlodipine for Blood Pressure and Chest Pain

What it is

Norvapref is a brand of amlodipine, a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing blood vessels to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart.

What it's used for

Norvapref is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It is also used to treat chronic stable angina (chest pain due to narrowed heart arteries), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and coronary artery disease confirmed by angiography in patients without heart failure or low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

Norvapref is taken by mouth once daily. Typical starting doses are 5 mg for adults, with a maximum of 10 mg per day. Smaller or elderly patients, or those with liver problems, may start at 2.5 mg. For children, the starting dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. Always follow your doctor's exact instructions and do not change your dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Norvapref include swelling of the legs or ankles (edema), dizziness, flushing, and palpitations (feeling your heart beat). These are more common with higher doses. Other side effects that occur in more than 1% of patients are fatigue and nausea.

Important cautions

Do not take Norvapref if you are allergic to amlodipine. Tell your doctor if you have severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the heart valve) because it may cause low blood pressure. In people with severe obstructive coronary artery disease, starting or increasing the dose may rarely worsen chest pain or trigger a heart attack. If you have severe liver disease, your doctor will start with a low dose and increase it slowly.
