What it is

Ampine is a brand of amlodipine, which belongs to a class of medicines called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart.

What it's used for

Ampine (amlodipine) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack. It is also prescribed for chronic stable angina (chest pain), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's angina), and in patients with documented coronary artery disease who do not have heart failure or a low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

Ampine tablets are taken by mouth once daily. For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg, with a maximum of 10 mg per day. Elderly, fragile, or small patients, and those with liver problems, may start at 2.5 mg daily. For children starting treatment, the dose is typically between 2.5 mg and 5 mg once daily. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's specific instructions on dosing.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of amlodipine include swelling of the legs or ankles (edema), dizziness, flushing, and palpitations. These are more likely at higher doses. Other side effects reported by more than 1% of patients include fatigue and nausea.

Important cautions

Do not take Ampine if you are allergic to amlodipine. Use with caution in patients with severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the heart valve) as it may cause symptomatic low blood pressure (hypotension). In patients with severe coronary artery disease, starting or increasing the dose may rarely worsen angina or lead to a heart attack. Patients with severe liver disease should have their dose adjusted slowly.
