What it is

Jayvas is a brand of amlodipine, a medicine from a class called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

What it's used for

Amlodipine, the active ingredient in Jayvas, is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It is also used for chronic stable angina (chest pain due to narrowed heart arteries), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and angiographically documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or a low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

Jayvas tablets are taken by mouth, usually once daily. The typical starting dose for adults is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum of 10 mg once daily. For small, fragile, elderly patients, or those with liver problems, a lower starting dose of 2.5 mg may be used. Children may start at 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions and do not change the dose without consulting a healthcare professional.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of amlodipine include swelling (edema) of the ankles or feet, dizziness, flushing, and palpitations (feeling of fast or irregular heartbeat). These often occur more with higher doses. Other side effects reported in more than 1% of patients are fatigue and nausea. If any side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Important cautions

Do not take Jayvas if you are allergic to amlodipine or any ingredient in the tablet. Use with caution if you have severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the heart valve), as symptomatic low blood pressure may occur. Rarely, starting or increasing the dose can worsen chest pain or trigger a heart attack, especially in those with severe coronary artery disease. If you have severe liver disease, your doctor will start you on a lower dose and go slowly. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, including herbal products.
