What it is

Hollyvasc is a brand of amlodipine. Amlodipine belongs to a class of medicines called calcium channel blockers. It helps relax blood vessels to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart.

What it's used for

Hollyvasc (amlodipine) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It is also used for chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's angina), and in patients with coronary artery disease who do not have heart failure or a very low ejection fraction.

How it's taken

For adults, the typical starting dose of Hollyvasc is 5 mg taken by mouth once daily. The maximum dose is 10 mg once daily. Smaller, frail, or elderly patients, or those with liver problems, may start at 2.5 mg once daily. For children, the starting dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. Always follow the dose prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of amlodipine (the active ingredient in Hollyvasc) include swelling (edema) of the legs or ankles, dizziness, flushing (redness and warmth), and palpitations (feeling of fast or irregular heartbeat). Other side effects that may occur are fatigue and nausea. These effects tend to be dose-related.

Important cautions

Hollyvasc is not suitable for people who are allergic to amlodipine. Use caution in patients with severe narrowing of the aortic valve (aortic stenosis) because it can cause low blood pressure. Rarely, worsening of chest pain or a heart attack can happen when starting treatment or increasing the dose, especially in those with severe coronary artery disease. Patients with severe liver disease should start at a lower dose and increase slowly. Speak to your doctor for full precautions.
