Benart: A Brand of Artemether + Lumefantrine

What it is

Benart is a brand name for a combination medicine containing artemether and lumefantrine. It belongs to the class of medicines called antimalarials. It is used to treat malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite.

What it's used for

Benart is used for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum in patients aged 2 months and older with a bodyweight of at least 5 kg. It is not for severe or complicated malaria and cannot be used to prevent malaria.

How it's taken

Benart tablets should be taken with food. The tablets may be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water for patients who have difficulty swallowing, including children. The medicine is typically given over 3 days for a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. Always follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare provider if any side effect is bothersome or persistent.

Important cautions

Do not take Benart if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine, or to any of the other ingredients. It should not be taken with certain medications that strongly affect the liver enzyme CYP3A4, such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John’s wort, as they may reduce its effectiveness. Caution is needed in patients with heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation), low potassium or magnesium levels, and in those taking other medicines that can affect the heart rhythm. Benart should not be taken with halofantrine, another antimalarial, or within one month of each other. Always inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking.
