What it is

Afemart Artemether Lumefantrine is a brand of the combination medicine artemether + lumefantrine, which is an antimalarial drug. It works by killing the parasite that causes malaria.

What it's used for

This medicine is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is for patients 2 months of age and older with a body weight of at least 5 kg. It is not for severe or complicated malaria, and it is not approved to prevent malaria.

How it's taken

Afemart Artemether Lumefantrine should be taken with food. Tablets can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water for easier swallowing, especially for children. The typical course lasts 3 days and includes 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. The dose depends on body weight; for adults weighing 35 kg or more, it is usually 4 tablets per dose. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions or changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Tell your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Afemart Artemether Lumefantrine if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine. Avoid use in patients with known QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other drugs that can prolong the QT interval. Do not take it with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as they may reduce effectiveness. Halofantrine should not be taken within one month of this medicine. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
