Balmal 20: A Brand of Artemether + Lumefantrine for Malaria Treatment

What it is

Balmal 20 is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine.

What it's used for

Balmal 20 is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is meant for patients who are 2 months of age and older and weigh at least 5 kg. This medicine is not for severe or complicated malaria and should not be used to prevent malaria.

How it's taken

Balmal 20 tablets should be taken with food to help absorption. If needed, tablets can be crushed and mixed with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water just before taking. The full course is taken over 3 days, for a total of 6 doses: the first dose, a second dose 8 hours later, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. The exact number of tablets depends on the patient's bodyweight. For adults weighing 35 kg or more, the dose is typically 4 tablets per dose. Children and smaller patients will need a different dose. Always follow the doctor's prescription.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of these bother you.

Important cautions

Do not use Balmal 20 if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine, or any of the other ingredients. Also, avoid using it together with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as they may reduce its effectiveness. It should not be taken by people with certain heart conditions like QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other medicines that affect the heart's rhythm. Do not take halofantrine (another malaria medicine) within one month of using Balmal 20, as it can increase heart risks. If you have any medical conditions or take other medicines, consult your doctor before use.
