Artlink (Artemether + Lumefantrine) - Uses, Side Effects, and More

What it is

Artlink is a brand of the antimalarial combination artemether + lumefantrine. It belongs to a class of medicines called artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) that work together to clear the malaria parasite from the blood.

What it's used for

Artlink is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is intended for patients who are 2 months of age and older and weigh at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Artlink tablets should be taken with food. If needed, the tablet may be crushed and mixed with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water just before taking. The typical course lasts 3 days, with a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose 8 hours later, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. The exact number of tablets per dose depends on body weight, so follow your doctor's prescription carefully.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults (occurring in more than 30% of patients) include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Other side effects may occur; consult your pharmacist or doctor if symptoms are bothersome.

Important cautions

Do not use Artlink if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any of its ingredients. Avoid use in patients with known QT prolongation (a heart rhythm condition), low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other medicines that prolong the QT interval. Artlink should not be taken with the antimalarial halofantrine, and at least one month should separate the two treatments. Also, tell your doctor if you are taking strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as they may reduce Artlink's effectiveness.
