Anntifaa 20: An Artemether + Lumefantrine Combination for Malaria

What it is

Anntifaa 20 is a brand of the combination medicine artemether and lumefantrine. It belongs to a class of antimalarial drugs that work together to clear the malaria parasite from the blood. Each tablet contains 20 mg of artemether and 120 mg of lumefantrine.

What it's used for

Anntifaa 20 is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is meant for patients who are 2 months of age or older and weigh at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

The tablets should be taken with food. They may be crushed and mixed with a little water just before taking, especially for children. A typical course lasts 3 days and includes a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose 8 hours later, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. For patients weighing 35 kg and above, the usual dose per administration is 4 tablets. Always follow the dosing schedule provided by your healthcare professional.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Serious side effects such as allergic reactions and changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation) are possible but less common. Consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not take Anntifaa 20 if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any tablet ingredients. Avoid use with strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and St. John's wort, as they can reduce effectiveness. This medicine should not be given with halofantrine or within one month of taking it. Caution is required in patients with heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation), low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other drugs that affect heart rhythm. Antimalarials should not be combined unless there is no alternative.
