What it is

Aluktem DS is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, which belongs to a class of medicines called antimalarials. It works by killing the malaria parasite in the blood.

What it's used for

Aluktem DS is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is for patients aged 2 months and older who weigh at least 5 kg. This medicine is not for severe malaria or for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Take Aluktem DS with food to help absorption. Tablets can be crushed and mixed with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water if needed, especially for children. The typical course is 6 doses over 3 days: the first dose, a second dose 8 hours later, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. Always follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist based on body weight.

Common side effects

Common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. More serious side effects can include allergic reactions, changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and interactions with other medicines. Seek medical attention if you experience any severe reactions.

Important cautions

Do not take Aluktem DS if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine. Avoid use with strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart rhythm problems, low potassium or magnesium levels, or are taking other medicines that may affect heart rhythm. Do not take halofantrine within one month of this medicine.
