Aptem 80: Artemether + Lumefantrine for Malaria

What it is

Aptem 80 is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, which is a combination antimalarial drug used to treat acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.

What it's used for

Aptem 80 is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum in patients from 2 months of age and weighing 5 kg and above. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Take Aptem 80 by mouth with food. The typical course lasts 3 days and includes a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. If needed, the tablet can be crushed and mixed with 1–2 teaspoons of water just before taking. Your doctor will determine the exact dose based on your weight. Always follow the prescription exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults (occurring in more than 30% of users) include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Tell your doctor if any side effect bothers you or does not go away.

Important cautions

Do not use Aptem 80 if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any of the tablet ingredients. Avoid use if you have a known heart condition called QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or if you are taking other drugs that can prolong the QT interval. Do not take halofantrine (another antimalarial) within one month of this medicine. Strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and St. John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of this medicine. Always tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
