What it is

Baltenart 20 120 Dispersible is a brand name for artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine. It belongs to the class of antimalarials used to treat malaria infections.

What it's used for

Baltenart is used for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in patients 2 months of age and older with a bodyweight of 5 kg and above. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for prevention of malaria.

How it's taken

Baltenart should be taken with food. Tablets may be crushed and mixed with water for children. The typical course is given over 3 days for a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. The exact dose depends on body weight. Always follow your doctor’s instructions or consult a pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Serious side effects can include allergic reactions and QT interval prolongation (a heart rhythm change). Your doctor will monitor for these.

Important cautions

Do not take Baltenart if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems (especially long QT syndrome), low potassium or magnesium levels, or if you take medicines like rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John’s wort. Do not take halofantrine within one month of Baltenart. These can affect how the medicine works or increase the risk of side effects.
