Artefex QS Softgels: A Brand of Artemether + Lumefantrine

What it is

Artefex QS Softgels is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine that treats malaria by killing the parasite that causes it. Each softgel contains 80 mg of artemether and 480 mg of lumefantrine. It is a capsule for oral use and is registered with NAFDAC under number A4-101126.

What it's used for

Artefex QS Softgels is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in patients aged 2 months and older who weigh at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Artefex QS Softgels should be taken with food. The typical treatment course lasts 3 days and includes a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose 8 hours later, then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. A healthcare provider will determine the exact number of softgels per dose based on body weight. Tablets may be crushed if needed (for patients who have difficulty swallowing), but follow your doctor’s instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults (occurring in more than 30% of people) include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Other side effects are possible; tell your doctor if any reaction bothers you.

Important cautions

Do not use Artefex QS Softgels if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine. Avoid use if you have a known heart condition called QT prolongation, low potassium, or low magnesium. Do not take it with halofantrine (another antimalarial) within one month. Also avoid strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John’s wort, as they may reduce the medicine’s effectiveness. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
