Andermal 20: Artemether + Lumefantrine Tablets for Malaria

What it is

Andermal 20 is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine. It belongs to the class of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) and works by killing the malaria parasite in the blood.

What it's used for

Andermal 20 is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in patients aged 2 months and older with a bodyweight of at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for malaria prevention.

How it's taken

Andermal 20 tablets should be taken with food to improve absorption. The typical course lasts 3 days and includes 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, then twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. Tablets may be crushed and mixed with 1–2 teaspoons of water just before administration for those who have trouble swallowing. Always follow the dosing instructions from your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects reported in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Other side effects may occur. If any reaction is bothersome or persistent, consult your healthcare provider.

Important cautions

Do not use Andermal 20 if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any tablet ingredients. Avoid taking it with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as they can reduce its effectiveness. Use with caution in patients with a history of QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs. Do not take halofantrine within one month of Andermal 20. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use.
