Avromal DS (Artemether + Lumefantrine)

What it is

Avromal DS is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine known as an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). It contains 80 mg of artemether and 480 mg of lumefantrine per tablet.

What it's used for

Avromal DS is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) in patients who are 2 months of age or older and weigh at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Avromal DS should be taken with food. The typical course lasts 3 days and consists of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. Exact dosing depends on body weight and should be determined by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions and changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation). If you experience any severe or persistent symptoms, seek medical attention.

Important cautions

Do not use Avromal DS if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any tablet ingredients. Avoid use if you have known QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or are taking other drugs that affect heart rhythm. Inform your doctor about all medications you take, especially strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and St. John's wort, as they may reduce effectiveness. Do not take halofantrine within one month of using Avromal DS.
