Arnate DS: Uses, Side Effects, and Availability in Nigeria

What it is

Arnate DS is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine. It contains two active ingredients: artemether 80 mg and lumefantrine 480 mg per tablet. It is used to treat infections caused by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

What it's used for

Arnate DS is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum in patients 2 months of age and older with a bodyweight of 5 kg and above. It has been shown to be effective in geographical regions where resistance to chloroquine has been reported. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria or for prevention of malaria.

How it's taken

Arnate DS tablets should be taken with food. The tablets can be crushed and mixed with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water just before taking, especially for children. The usual course is administered over 3 days for a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. For adults weighing 35 kg and above, the typical dose is 4 tablets per dose, but patients should follow their doctor's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults (occurring in more than 30% of patients) include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Serious side effects can include allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) and changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Seek medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction or irregular heartbeat.

Important cautions

Do not use Arnate DS if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any other ingredient in the tablet. Avoid use in people with known QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other medicines that prolong the QT interval. Do not take Arnate DS with strong inducers of the enzyme CYP3A4 such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as they may reduce its effectiveness. Arnate DS should not be given within one month of taking halofantrine due to potential additive effects on heart rhythm. Always inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking.
