What it is

Agwoiba 20 is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, a combination antimalarial medicine known as an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). It is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.

What it's used for

Agwoiba 20 is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum in patients aged 2 months and older with a body weight of 5 kg and above. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.

How it's taken

Agwoiba 20 tablets should be taken with food. The tablets can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water for patients who have difficulty swallowing. The typical course is given over 3 days, consisting of a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice-daily (morning and evening) for the following 2 days. Always follow the dosing instructions from your healthcare provider.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). Serious side effects may include allergic reactions and changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation).

Important cautions

Do not use Agwoiba 20 if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any other ingredients. It should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort, as these may reduce its effectiveness. Avoid use in patients with known QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium levels, or those taking other drugs that prolong the QT interval.
