What it is

Aksoal 20 is a brand of artemether + lumefantrine, an antimalarial medicine combination. It belongs to a class of drugs that treat malaria by eliminating the Plasmodium parasite from the blood. Each tablet contains 20 mg of artemether and 120 mg of lumefantrine.

What it's used for

Aksoal 20 is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in patients from 2 months of age and weighing at least 5 kg. It is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for prevention of malaria.

How it's taken

The medicine should be taken with food. Tablets may be crushed and mixed with water for children or those who have difficulty swallowing. The typical course is over 3 days, with a total of 6 doses: an initial dose, a second dose after 8 hours, and then twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 2 days. The exact number of tablets per dose depends on body weight and should be determined by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, and joint pain. Other side effects may occur. Serious side effects include allergic reactions, QT prolongation (heart rhythm changes), and interactions with other medicines. If you experience any unusual symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.

Important cautions

Do not take Aksoal 20 if you are allergic to artemether or lumefantrine, or any of the inactive ingredients. Avoid taking it with strong CYP3A4 inducers (such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John's wort) as they can reduce effectiveness. Use with caution in patients with heart problems (QT prolongation, electrolyte imbalances) or those taking other drugs that affect heart rhythm. Do not take halofantrine (another antimalarial) within one month of taking Aksoal 20. Always inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
