What it is

Traben Oral is a brand of albendazole, an anthelmintic (anti-worm) medicine that treats infections caused by parasitic worms. It is a 100 mg/5 mL suspension and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-9738.

What it's used for

Traben Oral is used to treat two serious parasitic infections: neurocysticercosis, caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) affecting the brain; and cystic hydatid disease, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) affecting the liver, lungs, or peritoneum.

How it's taken

This medicine is taken by mouth with food to improve absorption. A doctor determines the dose and treatment duration based on the patient's weight, condition, and response. Patients must follow their prescription exactly and should never change the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and reversible hair loss. In patients treated for neurocysticercosis, side effects may also include increased intracranial pressure, meningeal signs, and fever. Some side effects need medical attention.

Important cautions

Traben Oral can cause serious bone marrow suppression, which may be life-threatening. Regular blood tests are required to monitor blood counts. It should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary, as it may harm the unborn baby. A pregnancy test may be needed before starting treatment. People with a known allergy to albendazole or other benzimidazole drugs should not use this medicine.
