What it is

Aphazole is a brand of albendazole. Albendazole belongs to a class of medicines called anthelmintics, which kill parasitic worms. Specifically, it works against certain tapeworms. It is available as a 200 mg tablet.

What it's used for

Aphazole is used to treat two main types of tapeworm infections: neurocysticercosis, which affects the brain and is caused by the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), and cystic hydatid disease, which affects the liver, lungs, and peritoneum and is caused by the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

Aphazole tablets are taken by mouth with food. The dose and length of treatment depend on the patient's weight and the specific infection. For example, hydatid disease is typically given in 28-day cycles with a 14-day break between cycles. Neurocysticercosis is usually treated for 8 to 30 days. Always follow your doctor's prescription exactly. Do not change the dose on your own.

Common side effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, reversible hair loss, fever, and abnormal liver function tests. In patients with neurocysticercosis, side effects may also include increased pressure inside the skull or signs of meningitis.

Important cautions

Do not take Aphazole if you are allergic to albendazole or any other benzimidazole medicines. Albendazole can cause serious bone marrow suppression, so your doctor may monitor your blood counts regularly, especially during long-term use. Women who can become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment and should avoid pregnancy while taking Aphazole, as it may harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
