What it is

Hukzole is a brand of albendazole. Albendazole is an anthelmintic (anti-worm) medication belonging to the benzimidazole class.

What it's used for

Hukzole (albendazole) is indicated for the treatment of two types of parasitic infections: parenchymal neurocysticercosis due to active lesions caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), and cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

Albendazole tablets should be taken with food. The dosage and treatment duration depend on the condition and the patient's weight. For hydatid disease, treatment typically consists of a 28-day cycle followed by a 14-day albendazole-free interval for a total of three cycles. For neurocysticercosis, treatment usually lasts 8 to 30 days. A doctor will determine the appropriate dose and schedule.

Common side effects

Common side effects (occurring in 1% or more of patients) include abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, reversible alopecia (hair loss), headache, dizziness, vertigo, and fever. In neurocysticercosis, additional side effects may include raised intracranial pressure and meningeal signs. Consult a healthcare professional if side effects persist or worsen.

Important cautions

Hukzole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to albendazole or any benzimidazole compound. Albendazole can cause bone marrow suppression, which may be fatal; blood counts should be monitored at the start of each treatment cycle and every two weeks during therapy. It also carries embryo-fetal toxicity risk. Women of reproductive potential should have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment and should avoid becoming pregnant while on the medication. Always disclose all other medicines to your doctor.
