What it is

Chemtel is a brand of albendazole, an anthelmintic (anti-worm) medicine. It is used to treat infections caused by tapeworm larvae, specifically neurocysticercosis (infection in the brain from pork tapeworm larvae) and hydatid disease (cysts in the liver, lungs, or abdomen from dog tapeworm larvae).

What it's used for

Chemtel (albendazole) is indicated for two main conditions: (1) neurocysticercosis, which is an infection of the brain caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium); and (2) cystic hydatid disease, which affects the liver, lungs, or peritoneum and is caused by the larval stage of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

Albendazole tablets are taken by mouth with food. The typical dosing depends on the patient's weight and the condition being treated. For example, for patients weighing 60 kg or more, the usual dose is 400 mg twice daily. For those under 60 kg, the dose is adjusted by body weight. Treatment cycles vary: for hydatid disease, a 28-day cycle followed by a 14-day break is often used, while for neurocysticercosis, treatment may last 8 to 30 days. Common side effects

Common side effects reported in clinical trials include: abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, reversible hair loss (alopecia), headache, dizziness or vertigo, and fever. In neurocysticercosis patients, side effects may also include raised intracranial pressure and meningeal signs (stiff neck, sensitivity to light). This is not a complete list. Important cautions

Do not take Chemtel if you are allergic to albendazole or any benzimidazole drugs. Albendazole can cause bone marrow suppression, which may be serious; blood counts should be monitored before each treatment cycle and every two weeks during therapy. Albendazole may harm an unborn baby; women of reproductive potential should have a pregnancy test before starting treatment and avoid pregnancy during therapy.
