What it is

Benochi Albendazole is a brand of albendazole, which is an anthelmintic – a medicine that kills parasitic worms. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of drugs and is used to treat infections caused by tapeworm larvae.

What it's used for

Benochi Albendazole is used for two main conditions: 1) Neurocysticercosis – an infection of the brain caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). 2) Hydatid disease – an infection of the liver, lungs, or peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

The dosage depends on body weight and the condition being treated. Typically, for adults weighing 60 kg or more, the dose is 400 mg twice daily. For those under 60 kg, the dose is 15 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into two doses (maximum 800 mg per day). The tablets should be taken with food. For hydatid disease, treatment is given in 28-day cycles followed by a 14-day break, for a total of three cycles. For neurocysticercosis, treatment usually lasts 8 to 30 days. Common side effects

Common side effects reported in clinical trials depend on the condition being treated. For hydatid disease: abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, reversible hair loss (alopecia), headache, dizziness or vertigo, and fever. For neurocysticercosis: headache, nausea and vomiting, raised pressure inside the skull (intracranial pressure), and signs of meningeal irritation (such as neck stiffness). Important cautions

Do not take Benochi Albendazole if you are allergic to albendazole or any other medicines in the benzimidazole class. Albendazole can cause bone marrow suppression, which may be serious and has led to deaths. Your doctor will monitor your blood counts before starting each 28-day cycle and every two weeks during treatment. If significant changes occur, treatment may be stopped. Albendazole can also harm an unborn baby. Women of childbearing age should have a pregnancy test before starting therapy and should avoid becoming pregnant during treatment.
