Avrozole (Albendazole 200 mg Tablets): Information and Uses

What it is

Avrozole is a brand of albendazole, an anthelmintic drug that kills parasitic tapeworms. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of medicines.

What it's used for

Avrozole (albendazole) is used to treat two main infections caused by tapeworm larvae: (1) Neurocysticercosis – infection of the brain caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). (2) Hydatid disease – infection of the liver, lungs, or peritoneum caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

Avrozole tablets should be taken with food. The dose and duration depend on the condition and body weight. For adults weighing 60 kg or more, the typical dose is 400 mg twice daily; for those under 60 kg, the dose is 15 mg per kg of body weight per day divided into two doses (maximum 800 mg daily). Treatment cycles vary: for hydatid disease, a 28-day course is followed by a 14-day break, repeated for 3 cycles. For neurocysticercosis, treatment usually lasts 8 to 30 days. Always follow your doctor or pharmacist's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects (occurring in 1% or more of patients) include: abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, temporary hair loss (alopecia), headache, dizziness or vertigo, and fever. In neurocysticercosis treatment, additional side effects may include raised intracranial pressure and meningeal signs (stiff neck, sensitivity to light).

Important cautions

Do not take Avrozole if you are allergic to albendazole or any other benzimidazole medicines (e.g., mebendazole). It can cause bone marrow suppression, which may be fatal. Your doctor will monitor your blood counts at the start of each 28-day treatment cycle and every two weeks during therapy. If significant changes occur, the medicine should be stopped. Avrozole can harm an unborn baby. Women who can become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment and should avoid pregnancy while taking this medicine. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
