What it is

Kesitel Albendazole USP is a brand of albendazole. Albendazole belongs to a class of drugs called anthelmintics, which work by killing parasitic worms. This medicine is available as 400 mg tablets.

What it's used for

Kesitel Albendazole USP is used to treat two types of tapeworm infections: neurocysticercosis, caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) that affects the brain; and hydatid disease, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) that affects the liver, lungs, and the lining of the abdomen.

How it's taken

Kesitel Albendazole USP tablets are taken by mouth, usually with food. The dose and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and the patient's weight. For neurocysticercosis, treatment typically lasts 8 to 30 days. For hydatid disease, treatment often follows a 28-day cycle with a 14-day break between cycles, for a total of 3 cycles. A healthcare professional will determine the right dose for each patient.

Common side effects

Common side effects of Kesitel Albendazole USP include abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and fever. Some people may experience reversible hair loss. In patients treated for neurocysticercosis, side effects may also include raised pressure inside the skull and signs of meningitis (stiff neck, sensitivity to light).

Important cautions

Do not use Kesitel Albendazole USP if you are allergic to albendazole or other benzimidazole drugs. This medicine can cause serious bone marrow suppression, so your doctor may order blood tests before starting treatment and every two weeks while on therapy. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should take a pregnancy test before starting treatment, as albendazole can harm an unborn baby.
