Cystazole: A Brand of Albendazole for Parasitic Worm Infections

What it is

Cystazole is a brand of albendazole, which belongs to a class of drugs called anthelmintics. These medicines work against parasitic worm infections in the body.

What it's used for

Cystazole (albendazole) is used to treat two types of tapeworm infections. The first is neurocysticercosis, which affects the brain and is caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). The second is hydatid disease, which affects the liver, lungs, and the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

How it's taken

Cystazole tablets are taken by mouth with food. The dose and length of treatment depend on the condition and the patient's body weight. For hydatid disease, treatment is given in 28-day cycles followed by a 14-day break, for a total of 3 cycles. For neurocysticercosis, treatment typically lasts 8 to 30 days. Always follow your doctor's exact instructions.

Common side effects

Common side effects reported with albendazole include headache, dizziness or vertigo, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and reversible hair loss. For hydatid disease, abnormal liver function tests may also occur. For neurocysticercosis, raised pressure inside the skull and signs of meningitis have been reported. These are not all possible side effects. Consult your doctor if any side effect worries you.

Important cautions

Albendazole can cause serious problems, including bone marrow suppression, which can be fatal. Blood counts should be checked at the start of each 28-day treatment cycle and every 2 weeks during therapy. If significant changes occur, treatment should be stopped. Albendazole may also harm an unborn baby. Women who can become pregnant must have a pregnancy test before starting treatment and should avoid pregnancy while on this medicine. Do not use albendazole if you are allergic to benzimidazole drugs or any ingredient in Cystazole.
