Balzole: A Brand of Albendazole for Tapeworm Infections

What it is

Balzole is a brand of the generic medicine albendazole, an anthelmintic (anti-worm) drug that is used to treat infections caused by tapeworms. It is available as a 400 mg tablet and is manufactured by Amneal Pharmaceuticals of New York LLC. This medicine is registered with Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control under number B4-5220.

What it's used for

Balzole is used to treat two types of tapeworm infections: neurocysticercosis, which is caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) and affects the brain; and cystic hydatid disease, which is caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) and affects the liver, lungs, and peritoneum.

How it's taken

Balzole tablets are taken by mouth and should be taken with food. The dose and length of treatment depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s weight. Typically, treatment may last from 8 to 30 days for neurocysticercosis, or consist of 28-day cycles followed by a 14-day break for hydatid disease. Always follow the dosage instructions from your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

Common side effects of Balzole include abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, reversible hair loss, headache, dizziness or vertigo, and fever. In neurocysticercosis, side effects may also include raised intracranial pressure and meningeal signs. Tell your doctor if you experience any side effects.

Important cautions

Do not use Balzole if you are allergic to albendazole or other benzimidazole medicines. This medicine can suppress bone marrow function, so your doctor will monitor your blood counts regularly during treatment. Balzole may harm an unborn baby; women of childbearing age should have a pregnancy test before starting treatment and avoid pregnancy while on this medicine. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take.
