What it is

Pregalad is a brand of pregabalin. It belongs to a class of medicines called anticonvulsants and is also used for nerve pain. The registered strength is 75 mg, available as capsules, with NAFDAC registration number B4-9656.

What it's used for

Pregalad capsules are indicated for: neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles), fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain due to spinal cord injury. It is also used as an add-on treatment for partial-onset seizures in patients one month of age and older.

How it's taken

Pregalad capsules are taken by mouth. The typical starting dose for adults is 150 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dose may be adjusted by your doctor based on your condition and response. The maximum daily dose can be up to 600 mg, depending on the indication. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness (somnolence), swelling of the hands and feet (peripheral edema), and weight gain. More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include: angioedema (swelling of the throat, head, or neck), hypersensitivity reactions (hives, difficulty breathing), suicidal thoughts or behaviour, and respiratory depression.

Important cautions

Do not use Pregalad if you are allergic to pregabalin or any of its components. Tell your doctor if you have a history of breathing problems, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Pregabalin can cause angioedema and serious allergic reactions – stop the medicine and seek emergency help if you experience swelling of the face, mouth, or throat, or trouble breathing. Antiepileptic drugs like pregabalin may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts. Do not stop taking Pregalad suddenly, as withdrawal symptoms may occur. Your doctor will guide you on how to gradually reduce the dose.
