What it's used for

Pregabalin capsules are indicated for: managing neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and spinal cord injury; treating postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles); as an add-on treatment for partial-onset seizures in patients aged one month and older; and managing fibromyalgia (a condition with widespread pain).

How it's taken

For adults, the typical starting dose is 150 mg per day, taken in divided doses (two or three times daily). Depending on your condition and response, your doctor may adjust the dose; for example, the maximum dose for diabetic nerve pain is 300 mg per day, while for postherpetic neuralgia it can go up to 600 mg per day. For children with partial-onset seizures, your doctor will prescribe the right amount based on weight. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions exactly. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as this may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Common side effects

Common side effects can include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, weight gain, and swelling of the hands and feet. More serious side effects require immediate medical attention: angioedema (swelling of the throat, head, or neck), hypersensitivity reactions (hives, difficulty breathing), suicidal thoughts or behavior, respiratory depression (slow or troubled breathing), and peripheral edema.
