What it is

Centgesic is a brand of pregabalin. Pregabalin is a medicine that works on the central nervous system to calm overactive nerve signals. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants and is used to treat nerve pain and certain types of seizures.

What it's used for

Centgesic capsules are indicated for: nerve pain caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy, nerve pain after shingles (postherpetic neuralgia), as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in people 1 month of age and older, fibromyalgia, and nerve pain due to spinal cord injury.

How it's taken

Centgesic capsules are taken by mouth. For most adult conditions, treatment typically starts at 150 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. For diabetic nerve pain, the maximum dose is 300 mg per day given in three divided doses. For postherpetic neuralgia, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 600 mg per day divided into two or three doses. Always follow your doctor's exact instructions and do not change your dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

Possible side effects of Centgesic include dizziness, sleepiness, swelling of the legs (peripheral edema), weight gain, and an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Serious side effects such as angioedema (swelling of the throat, head, or neck) and breathing problems have occurred. If you notice any swelling or difficulty breathing, stop the medicine and get emergency help right away.

Important cautions

Do not take Centgesic if you are allergic to pregabalin or any of its ingredients. It can cause dizziness and drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. There is an increased risk of suicidal thoughts; watch for changes in mood or behavior. Do not stop the medicine suddenly, as this may cause withdrawal-like reactions. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, as interactions can occur.
