What it is

Ladicef is a brand of ceftriaxone, which belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Ladicef is used to treat bacterial infections that are either proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria susceptible to ceftriaxone. To help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria, it should only be used when bacterial infection is likely.

How it's taken

Ladicef is given as an injection, either into a vein (IV) or into a muscle (IM). This particular formulation is a pharmacy bulk package intended for IV infusion only. The infusion is typically given over 30 minutes. It must not be mixed with calcium-containing solutions such as Ringer's or Hartmann's solution, as this can cause a precipitate to form. Always follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions for administration.

Common side effects

Ceftriaxone is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include pain, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site. After IV injection, phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) may occur. After IM injection, warmth, tightness, or induration (hardening of the tissue) have been reported.

Important cautions

Do not use Ladicef if you are allergic to ceftriaxone, any other cephalosporin antibiotic, or any ingredient in the medicine. Inform your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to penicillin or other beta-lactam drugs. This medicine is contraindicated in premature infants up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur; your doctor will check your medical history before starting treatment.
