What it is

Camtaxone is a brand of Ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic that fights bacteria. It comes as a 1 g powder for injection.

What it's used for

Camtaxone is used to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. Before starting treatment, a healthcare provider may test the bacteria to ensure the drug will work.

How it's taken

Camtaxone is given by intravenous (IV) infusion over about 30 minutes or by intramuscular (IM) injection. For the specific pharmacy bulk package, it is intended only for IV infusion. Do not mix or dilute Camtaxone with calcium-containing solutions such as Ringer's or Hartmann's solution, as this can form a precipitate.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site. Phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) has been reported rarely after IV use. Warmth or tightness at the injection site may also occur.

Important cautions

Camtaxone should not be used in people with known hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or any of its ingredients. People with a history of allergy to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics may have a higher risk of reaction. It is contraindicated in premature neonates up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Always inform your doctor of any allergies or medical conditions before use.
