What it is

What it's used for

Betaceftran is used to treat bacterial infections that are confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria sensitive to ceftriaxone. Therapy may be started before lab results are available, but it should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or very likely.

How it's taken

Betaceftran is given as an injection into a vein (intravenous) or into a muscle (intramuscular) by a healthcare professional. For intravenous use, it is typically infused over about 30 minutes. Do not mix with calcium-containing solutions like Ringer's or Hartmann's, as this can cause precipitation.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site. Some people may experience phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) after IV use. Warmth, tightness, or induration at the injection site may also occur.

Important cautions

Betaceftran should not be used in patients with known allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins. It is also contraindicated in premature infants up to 41 weeks postmenstrual age. Before treatment, inform your doctor of any allergies. Serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur.
