What it is

Friax is a brand of ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

What it's used for

Friax is used to treat bacterial infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. It should only be used when necessary to help prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Friax is given as an injection, either intravenously (into a vein) or intramuscularly (into a muscle). When given intravenously, it is typically infused over 30 minutes. It must not be mixed or diluted with any calcium-containing solutions (such as Ringer's or Hartmann's solution), as this can cause a precipitate to form.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site. Phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) may also occur after intravenous administration.

Important cautions

Friax should not be used in people with a known allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins. It is also contraindicated in premature neonates up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Caution is advised in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam drugs.
