What it is

Avasc is a brand of ceftriaxone, which belongs to the class of cephalosporin antibiotics. It is supplied as a 1 g powder that must be mixed with a suitable liquid (diluent) before being given as an injection. Ceftriaxone works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Avasc is used to treat bacterial infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by germs susceptible to ceftriaxone. It should only be used when necessary to help reduce the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A doctor will decide the right treatment based on laboratory tests and the type of infection.

How it's taken

Avasc is given as an intramuscular (into a muscle) or intravenous (into a vein) injection by a healthcare professional. For intravenous use, the powder is reconstituted and infused over about 30 minutes. Do not mix it with any diluent that contains calcium (such as Ringer's solution or Hartmann's solution), because a harmful precipitate can form. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.

Common side effects

Common side effects reported with ceftriaxone injections include pain, swelling, tenderness, or hardening at the injection site. Some people may experience phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) after intravenous use, or a feeling of warmth or tightness after intramuscular injection. These reactions are usually mild.

Important cautions

Avasc should not be used in patients who have had an allergic reaction to ceftriaxone, any other cephalosporin antibiotic, or penicillin. It is also contraindicated in premature babies up to 41 weeks postmenstrual age. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor about any allergies, especially to beta-lactam antibiotics. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can occur, so medical supervision is essential.
