What it is

Biophin IM is a brand of ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic that fights bacterial infections. It contains 1 g of ceftriaxone as ceftriaxone sodium in a powder form that must be mixed with a liquid and given as an injection.

What it's used for

Biophin IM is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to ceftriaxone, such as those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and other areas. It should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected, to help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

This medicine is given by a healthcare professional, usually as an intravenous (IV) infusion over about 30 minutes. It may also be given as an injection into a muscle. The powder must be reconstituted with a suitable diluent, and calcium-containing solutions like Ringer's or Hartmann's solution must not be used because they can cause a dangerous precipitate to form.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site. Phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) has been reported with IV use, and some people may experience warmth or tightness after intramuscular injection.

Important cautions

Biophin IM should not be used in patients with known allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins. It is contraindicated in premature newborns up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Tell your doctor about any allergies or if you are taking other medicines. The injection must not be mixed with calcium-containing fluids.
