Hochicef (Ceftriaxone) – An Overview

What it is

Hochicef is a brand of ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic. Antibiotics in this class work by killing bacteria or stopping them from growing. It is supplied as a 1 g injection and has been registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) with registration number B4-7193.

What it's used for

Hochicef is used to treat bacterial infections. It is typically given when a healthcare provider suspects or has confirmed that bacteria are causing the infection. Before treatment, samples of the infected material may be taken to identify the bacteria and test whether ceftriaxone will be effective.

How it's taken

Hochicef is given as an injection. It can be administered into a vein (intravenously) or into a muscle (intramuscularly). When given intravenously, the infusion usually takes about 30 minutes. It is very important not to mix Hochicef with any solution that contains calcium, such as Ringer's solution or Hartmann's solution, because this can cause crystals to form. A doctor or nurse will give this injection.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, swelling, or hardness at the injection site. Some people may feel warmth or tightness after an intramuscular injection. Inflammation of a vein (phlebitis) is less common, occurring in less than 1% of cases after intravenous use.

Important cautions

Hochicef should not be used in people who are allergic to ceftriaxone, any other cephalosporin, or any of the ingredients in the injection. People with a history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics may have an increased risk of an allergic reaction. It is also contraindicated in premature babies up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Always tell your doctor about any allergies before you receive Hochicef.
