BGCef: A Brand of Ceftriaxone Injection in Nigeria

What it is

BGCef is a brand of ceftriaxone, which belongs to a class of medicines called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

BGCef is used to treat bacterial infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria sensitive to ceftriaxone. A doctor will take samples to identify the infection and decide if this antibiotic is appropriate.

How it's taken

BGCef is given as an injection either into a vein (intravenous) or into a muscle (intramuscular). When given into a vein, it is usually infused over 30 minutes. It must not be mixed with any solution that contains calcium, such as Ringer's solution, because this can form a harmful precipitate.

Common side effects

BGCef is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include pain, hardening, or tenderness at the injection site. There may also be warmth or tightness after injection into a muscle. Irritation of the vein (phlebitis) occurs in less than 1% of people when given intravenously.

Important cautions

BGCef should not be used in anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, penicillins, or any similar antibiotic. It is also not safe for premature babies born before 41 weeks of pregnancy. Before treatment, tell your doctor about any allergies you have. Serious allergic reactions can occur and need immediate medical attention.
