What it is

Emceph is a brand of ceftriaxone, which belongs to a class of medicines called cephalosporin antibiotics. It is used to fight bacterial infections by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What it's used for

Emceph is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that are sensitive to ceftriaxone. Before starting treatment, doctors may take samples to identify the bacteria and test if ceftriaxone will work.

How it's taken

Emceph is given as an injection either into a vein (intravenous) or into a muscle (intramuscular). For intravenous use, it is typically infused over 30 minutes. It should not be mixed with calcium-containing fluids like Ringer's solution or Hartmann's solution, as this can cause a precipitate to form. A doctor or nurse will administer this injection.

Common side effects

Common side effects include pain, hardness, or tenderness at the injection site. In some cases, inflammation of the vein (phlebitis) may occur after intravenous use. Injection site reactions such as warmth or tightness have also been reported.

Important cautions

Emceph should not be used in people who are allergic to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or any of its ingredients. It should be used with caution in patients who have had allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics, as cross-sensitivity may occur. Emceph is contraindicated in premature infants up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor about any allergies.
