What it is

Ceftrust contains ceftriaxone, which belongs to a class of medicines called cephalosporin antibiotics. These drugs work by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

What it's used for

Ceftriaxone is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria susceptible to the drug. Before starting treatment, a sample from the infection site is usually taken to identify the bacteria and test whether they can be killed by ceftriaxone. Using antibiotics only when needed helps reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Ceftriaxone is given as an injection into a vein (intravenous) or a muscle (intramuscular). The powder must be mixed with a suitable liquid before use. For intravenous use, the injection is typically given as an infusion over 30 minutes. It is important to avoid diluents that contain calcium, such as Ringer's solution or Hartmann's solution, because a dangerous precipitate can form. Do not mix ceftriaxone with any calcium-containing solution during reconstitution or administration. Always follow the exact instructions of a healthcare professional.

Common side effects

Ceftriaxone is generally well tolerated. The most frequent side effects are local reactions at the injection site, including pain, hardness (induration), and tenderness. After intravenous injection, a vein inflammation (phlebitis) may occur in less than 1% of patients. After intramuscular injection, some patients may experience warmth, tightness, or induration. These effects are usually mild.

Important cautions

Ceftriaxone must not be used in patients who have had a severe allergic reaction to ceftriaxone, any other cephalosporin, or penicillin (cross-allergy is possible). It is also contraindicated in premature newborns up to a postmenstrual age of 41 weeks. Before treatment, the doctor should be told about any history of allergies, especially to medicines. Do not use calcium-containing diluents. Serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur, so the patient should be monitored closely during the first doses.
