Axone (Ceftriaxone) - Uses, Side Effects, and Safety Information

What it is

Axone is a brand of ceftriaxone, which belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What it's used for

Axone is used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. Before starting treatment, samples are typically taken to identify the specific bacteria and check which antibiotics will work. This helps reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Ceftriaxone (the active ingredient in Axone) is given as an injection, either into a vein (IV) or into a muscle (IM). The Pharmacy Bulk Package form is for IV infusion only. When given intravenously, it is typically infused over 30 minutes. Diluents containing calcium (such as Ringer's solution or Hartmann's solution) must not be used, as a precipitate can form. A doctor or nurse will determine the appropriate dose and route.

Common side effects

Ceftriaxone is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include pain, hardness, or tenderness at the injection site (reported in about 1% of patients). Phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) may occur in less than 1% of IV administrations. Warmth, tightness, or hardness at the injection site have also been reported after intramuscular injection. Important cautions

Axone should not be used in patients with a known allergy to ceftriaxone, any cephalosporin antibiotic, or any of its ingredients. Use with caution in patients who have had allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam drugs. It is also contraindicated in premature infants up to 41 weeks postmenstrual age. Tell your doctor about any allergies before treatment. If you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing), seek medical help immediately.
