Ciproheal (Ciprofloxacin 500 mg) – Informational Article

What it is

Ciproheal is a brand of ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is available as 500 mg tablets with NAFDAC registration number 04-7436.

What it's used for

Ciprofloxacin is indicated for the treatment of corneal ulcers caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus (Viridans Group). It is also indicated for conjunctivitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

How it's taken

For corneal ulcers: Two drops are instilled into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then two drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, two drops are instilled hourly. On the third through the fourteenth day, two drops are placed every four hours. Treatment may continue beyond 14 days if corneal re-epithelialisation has not occurred. For conjunctivitis, follow the prescribed dosing schedule. Always use as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effect is local burning or discomfort. White crystalline precipitates in the eye were seen in about 17% of patients. Other reactions occurring in less than 10% of patients include lid margin crusting, crystals or scales, foreign body sensation, itching, conjunctival hyperemia, and a bad taste following instillation. Less common effects include corneal staining, keratopathy or keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not inject this medicine into the eye. Serious and occasionally fatal allergic reactions have been reported with systemic quinolone therapy, even after the first dose. Symptoms may include cardiovascular collapse, loss of consciousness, tingling, swelling of the throat or face, difficulty breathing, hives, and itching. Immediate emergency treatment is required. Avoid use if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other quinolone.
