Ciprogud: A Brand of Ciprofloxacin 500 mg Tablets

What it is

Ciprogud is a brand of ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that treats bacterial infections. It is available as 500 mg tablets (dosage form: tablet) and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-7390.

What it's used for

Based on available information for ciprofloxacin, it is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

How it's taken

The clinical information available describes an ophthalmic solution dosage regimen: typically, for corneal ulcers, two drops every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of the first day, then hourly on the second day, and every four hours from day three to day 14. For Ciprogud tablets, dosing should be determined by a doctor or pharmacist; do not use the eye drop schedule for the tablet.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effect is local burning or discomfort. White crystalline precipitates may appear on the eye (seen in about 17% of patients in studies). Other side effects occurring in less than 10% of patients include lid margin crusting, crystals or scales, foreign body sensation, itching, conjunctival redness, and a bad taste after instillation. Less common effects (under 1%) include corneal staining, keratopathy or keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not use Ciprogud if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other component, or to other quinolones. Serious and occasionally fatal allergic reactions have been reported with systemic quinolones, including cardiovascular collapse, loss of consciousness, tingling, swelling of the throat or face, difficulty breathing, and hives. Emergency treatment may be needed. Note: The ophthalmic solution is not for injection into the eye; for tablets, follow your doctor's instructions.
