Biocipro 500 mg Tablet: What You Need to Know

What it is

Biocipro is a brand of ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

What it's used for

Biocipro (as ciprofloxacin) is indicated for corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

How it's taken

For corneal ulcers, the typical dosage is two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then two drops every 30 minutes for the rest of the first day. On the second day, two drops hourly. From the third to the fourteenth day, two drops every four hours. Treatment may continue if the cornea has not healed. For conjunctivitis, your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is local burning or discomfort. White crystalline precipitates in the eye were seen in about 17% of patients. Other side effects occurring in less than 10% of patients include lid margin crusting, crystals or scales, foreign body sensation, itching, redness of the eye, and a bad taste after instillation. Less common effects include corneal staining, keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not use Biocipro if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other quinolone antibiotic. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur even after the first dose and require immediate emergency treatment. This product is formulated for ophthalmic use only and should not be injected into the eye. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and other medicines you take.
