What it is

Ciproall-500 is a brand of ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that fights bacterial infections. The clinical information below comes from the ophthalmic solution form of ciprofloxacin.

What it's used for

Based on the ophthalmic solution data, ciprofloxacin is used to treat bacterial corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and others.

How it's taken

For corneal ulcers, the ophthalmic solution dosing is: two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then two drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On day two, two drops every hour. From day three through day fourteen, two drops every four hours. Treatment may continue beyond 14 days if needed.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is local burning or discomfort. In studies, about 17% of patients developed white crystalline precipitates on the eye. Other side effects (less than 10%) include lid margin crusting, crystals/scales, foreign body sensation, itching, conjunctival redness, and a bad taste after use. Rare side effects (less than 1%) include corneal staining, keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not use if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any quinolone antibiotic. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported with systemic quinolone therapy. This ophthalmic solution is for eye use only and must not be injected into the eye. Seek emergency treatment immediately if a serious allergic reaction occurs.
