Ciproeye Ophthalmic Eye Drops: A Brand of Ciprofloxacin for Eye Infections

What it is

Ciproeye Ophthalmic is a brand of ciprofloxacin, which belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It comes as eye drops with a strength of 0.3% w/v and is registered with NAFDAC under number B4-0441. Ciprofloxacin works by stopping bacteria from multiplying, helping to clear infections in the eye.

What it's used for

Ciproeye Ophthalmic is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, specifically corneal ulcers (an infection of the clear front part of the eye) and conjunctivitis (pink eye). It is effective against certain types of bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among others.

How it's taken

Ciproeye Ophthalmic is applied as eye drops. The dosing schedule depends on the severity of the infection. For corneal ulcers, a typical regimen involves putting two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of the first day. On the second day, it is usually given every hour, and from day three to day fourteen, every four hours. Treatment may continue longer if the cornea has not healed. Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly and do not change the dose on your own.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is local burning or discomfort in the eye after applying the drops. In some people using the drops frequently for corneal ulcers, white crystalline deposits may form on the eye surface (seen in about 17% of patients). Other side effects that occur in less than 10% of patients include crusting of the eyelid margins, scales or crystals, a feeling of something in the eye, itching, redness of the eye (conjunctival hyperemia), and a bad taste after using the drops.

Important cautions

Do not use Ciproeye Ophthalmic if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or any other quinolone antibiotic. This medicine is for use in the eye only and must not be injected. Serious allergic reactions, though rare, can occur and may require emergency treatment. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe itching, seek medical help immediately. Tell your doctor about any other medicines you are using, especially other eye drops.
